Gyula
Gyulai Vár (átvenni a szöveget a Műemlékekből. PM)
János György Harruckern started building the castle. After the great fire in 1801, the Wenckheim family rebuilt it. The final owner was the Almássy family, hence its name. The building has seen a lot, it was the venue of numerous historical events. For instance János Damjanich, a leader of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 and one of the 13 Martyrs of Arad was a “guest” here in 1849. From the 1850’s, Erkel Ferenc, born in Gyula often stayed in the castle; according to legend he composed the Bánk Bán and the Brankovics opera here. In the territory of the Gyula Castle Spa, which is established in the former castle park, a field maple without its crown reminds us of this. In 1861, on the first floor of the Castle, the 17 years old Mihály Munkácsy, as a painter apprentice at the time was practicing drawing, for the painter Elek Szamossy restoring the pictures of the ancestry. The riding hall of the castle at present houses the pools of the Gyula Castle Spa. After a long Cinderella dream, as of 2015 the castle serves as a visitor’s center. Exhibitions introduce the world of the nobles, memories of visits of kings, and fate of the servants.
Waters and land relief have played a significant role in the life of the castle. Contemporary maps show that the castle and the manor was located on a peninsula enclosed by the Fehér-Körös. There is a visitor’s center (museum) in the castle and serves as a venue for programs.

Almássy-mansion (Almásy kúria)
The classical mansion was built in 1829. The Almássy family also built a chapel and established a zoo in the town. Nowadays the castle serves as a school, but there is also a school and post history exhibition, and an Ady collection (Endre Ady, great Hungarian poet lived from 1877 to 1919)
The castle along with the park was built between 1875 and 1879 by the plans of Miklós Ybl. The castle was consecrated on 19 July 1882. The builders were the wealthy squires of the time: count Frigyes Wenckheim and his wife, Krisztina Wenckheim. At the time it was the brightest and most modern castle, with supreme interior. There is an artificial water spring in front of the building opposite the chapel, the so-called Zsigmond spring, drilled in 1894. Unfortunately it only operates in an artificial way, not natural. In the central section of the French garden, there is a very nice pool with a fountain, as well as the biggest sycamore tree in Békés county.
From 1945 to 2011 (for 66 years) a school also operated in the castle.
The castle park can be visited every day until dark, visiting the castle only after prior appointment.
Built between 1810 and 1820 in classical style, with romantic and eclectic details. In front of the entrance there is collonade with tympanum, with the coats of arms of the Bolza and Batthyány families, carved from stone. The stairs lead to the Holt-Körös. Here we can see a statue, the wolf suckling Romolus and Remus, founders of Rome. The statue is the one and only genuine in detail and same size copy of the one in the Capitolium of Rome, placing it was only possible with prior permission of the Italian government. The statue recalls Italian origin of the Bolza family.
